Paul Whittenbury

Position – Centre Back/Full Back
DOB – 7/10/1987
Debut v Notts Forest – Oct 2004
Nicknames – Chav, Whitts

Paul notched up over 150 appearances for the club before moving away from Watford for work. Able to play in a variety of positions, Paul was always quick to let the management know that his best position was whichever one he wasn’t playing in at the time. His highlights were being voted WIFC’s player of the tournament at his first Worldnet in 2005, and he was the overall player of the day at the Stevenage Tournament in 2010, almost unbelievably as it was voted for by the referees on the day.

Paul’s Q and A

Describe yourself in a sentence:
Body of a Bison, Pace of a Gazelle, Heart of a Lion.

What was the first WFC game you went to and what can you remember about it?
I think my first game was Newcastle at home mid 90’s but I don’t remember it. The first WFC game which got my attention was Plymouth away. It was a Tuesday night game and Watford were a couple up and cruising. David James had nothing to do so was talking to me through the net during the game.

Finest ever WFC memory:
I’ve been to some great games. Leeds in the play off final, beating Liverpool at Anfield, beating Chelsea at home…but for me the play off final against Bolton in ’99. Everything about the day sticks with me. My dad for some reason decided to pierce his nipple with a safety pin and stick some ribbons through it (he didn’t even take his top off during the day so I have no idea why he did it). Going to the game with my dad and his mate Ken. Nicky Wright was my favourite player at the time and his goal was legendary. Smartys goal.. and having seats next to the stairs so as the players came down after collecting the trophy I was up close to how happy they were. My dad used to work at a steward and the next season when the trophy was paraded around the ribbons fell off near my dad…so he naturally pocketed them and gave them to me. Magic.

Worst away trip and why:
Going to football with my dad and Ken when I was younger was the highlight of my week and even if some of the games were awful going with them was always exciting for me. I’ve probably been more selective as I’ve got older so can’t remember too many awful games.

WIFC playing highlight:
Players player in my first WorldNET. What happened to that pacy winger who wasn’t afraid to beat his man ay?

Favourite WIFC moment:
How well we played getting to the final at WorldNET in 2008 under the guidance of Scotty & Watty. We had a fantastic squad of players and everything seemed to click that WorldNET.

Red shorts or black?
Red. Black shorts are for old people who liked how we played under Ray Lewington.

Which actor would play you in ‘WIFC –The Movie’:
Anyone from Hollyoaks will do.

Phil McBride

Position – Right Back
DOB – 28/8/1987
Debut v Arsenal – Sep 2004
Nicknames – Squirrel

The first player introduced through the Glory Horns message board back in 2004, Phil played with squirrel-like determination. His WIFC highlights included being captain for the memorable funbus win at Rotherham in 2005, taking a beating in a Leeds gutter at his debut Worldnet and grabbing his first goal for the club at Dulwich in 2009. He also had a very credible stint with the pikey student mantle while at Uni in Leicester, where he developed an uncanny ability to sponge beer from his mates, and a substantial paunch in which to store his nuts. Phil also got involved off the pitch, and took on the role of fixtures organiser between 2012-14 and was voted clubman in 2012/13 for his efforts.

Better than Wellsy

What was the first WFC game you went to and what can you remember about it?

Bristol City at home in May 1995. We won 1-0 with a goal from Kevin Phillips. On the way home my dad apologised for all the bad language and my reply was (i was 7 at the time) “Don’t worry Dad, i hear worse than that at school!”.

Finest ever WFC memory

Winning the Playoff final at Wembley in 99. I was only eleven at the time but I remember it well. It was the moment that, after a childhood of being somewhat partial to Man United thanks to my Dad, I was sure I was going to be Watford for life.

Worst away trip and why

The Hull Funbus trip in 2008. 5am start, 4-0 thrashing in the morning, arguing amongst ourselves already, rubbish pub where nobody could get a beer at lunchtime or any food, pissing with rain, Shittu up front, 2-0 down after a handful of minutes, Boothroyd losing the plot, 3-0 final score, complete lack of fun in the funbus on the way home. Oh, and it was in Hull. Fond memories.

My one and only goal, a deft chip over the keeper away at Dulwich Hamlet in December 2009.

Steve Eustice

Position – Striker
DOB – 3/3/1978
Debut v Unknown Opponents – Oct 1999
Nicknames – Useless

Living in crime-ridden South London these days, Steve’s appearances are somewhat limited, but he still shows considerable prowess around goal when playing, and grabbed the vital goal to send the B team into the main Worldnet draw for the first time in 2007. Steve is another of the musically minded members of the squad, and his tastes in this respect cannot really be faulted, despite his bizarre love of Nylon Pylon and Coin-Op. He is another who appeared in the 2002 IFA Cup final, played in Gibbsy’s testimonial later that year, and also had the honour of being the first manager of the Vets team at Worldnet 2010.

Steve’s Q and A

Describe yourself in a sentence
A reflexive form of you (used as the direct or indirect object of a verb of the object of a preposition)

What was the first WFC game you went to and what can you remember about it?
I have absolutely no idea. I would have been about 6 or 7 at the time and went regularly enough that they all kind of blend into one. The first match I know for sure I was at was the 4-4 draw against Walsall FA Cup replay in February 1987.

Finest ever WFC memory
It has to be the play off final in 1999 although it’s run close by the pre-season tour to Italy under Vialli or being in the front row of the Vicarage Road end when Craig Ramage scored and ran over to give me a big sweaty hug.

Worst away trip and why
As a general rule, there are few places more depressing than the away stand at Selhurst park. But for a specific match, getting frostbite while losing 5-0 to Fulham takes some beating.

Martin Owen

Position – Centre Midfield
DOB – 21/8/1969
Debut v QPR – May 1997
Nicknames – Mowen, Eunuch, Part-timer who thinks he’s God

Another of the stalwarts, Mowen has been around since time began, but looks no older than the day he joined as his baby faced looks nicely wallpaper over the cracks of his advancing years. Blessed with a knack of looking retarded in every picture (see above and below..) old-timer Mowen was inducted to the WIFC Hall of fame in 2004, and had the honour of scoring WIFC’s only goal in the Gibbsy Testimonial match at the Vic in 2002, a free-kick blasted past Steve Sherwood. Time waits for no man, even Mowen, and he underwent surgery on a long-term achilles injury in 2011. Unfortunately, it was a success and Mowen made a comeback during 2012/13 at Chorley. He got buckled after 15 minutes..

10. Richard Murphy

Position – Right Midfield
DOB – 29/10/1979
Debut v Kilmarnock – Jun 2003
Nicknames – Murph, Dead Pan

Craig Ramage-alike Richard has firmly established himself as WIFC’s resident oddball since joining during the player recruitment drive in 2003. The Step-over enthusiast used to own the much missed and sadly departed Hot Rod, or badly battered Volvo to you and I, and has produced many memorable displays of wing wizadry. None more so than home to West Ham in 2008, as Murph beat his own club record when he passed up a whopping 284 opportunities to pass or cross in favour of another lollipop. Murph is now the club’s leading appearance maker and became the first player to appear 300 times for the club.

Murph’s Q and A

What was the first WFC game you went to and what can you remember about it?

Worst away trip and why
To the former home of Wigan Athletic, Springfield Park, in the 97/98 season. A ground as enticing as Susan Boyle’s undercarriage. Had to stand on a roofless, derelict terrace whilst it pissed down for the whole of the 1st half and we went 3-0 down. In the 2nd half we got it back to 3-2 and equalised in the last minute only for it to be ruled out. But it was after the game that things took a turn for the worse. I stopped off in the toilets where I was set upon by a teenage boy who touched me inappropriately on the bottom, verbally mocked me and then stole my limited edition Spice Girls’ backpack. Horrific. Years later I would come to know that boy as none other than Richard Wenham.

9. Dave Soloway

Position – Striker
DOB – 31/8/1979
Debut v Portsmouth – 2001
Nicknames – Leo Sayer, Lino

Speedy and big-nosed Soloway has proved to be a hugely versatile player for the club since his debut in 2001, appearing with distinction up front, in central midfield and on the wing. Dave’s sometimes straggly hair and uncanny ability to look like several famous people at once unsettles many an opponent, but let us not forget he is also a linesman beyond compare. Now one of the senior players, Dave is 3rd in the all-time scorers list, despite his penchant for hideous misses, and has also shown an eye for the big occasion, as he starred in the A team’s run to the Quarter Finals at Worldnet 2011, and scored a second half equaliser in the 2012 London Cup Final

DOB – 15/9/1987

Debut v West Ham – Oct 2005

Nicknames – Moods, Mrs Pricko

Winger and talc enthusiast Joel was recruited in 2005, having been spotted playing against WIFC for the Glory Horns team. Joel quickly became a key player and went on to break Matt Wells’ dominance of the most improved player award in 2006. He is also blessed with a turn of speed, a few Murph-esque tricks and a growing collection of great goals for his scrapbook, including a great run and finish against Nigel Gibbs’ Watford Legends in 2009. In 2011/12, Joel completed a unique treble, as he crowned a season in which he was top appearance maker and top scorer by winning the Player of the Year award, too.

Chris Dundon

Position – Centre Half/Centre Mid/Centre Forward
DOB – 23/3/1983
Debut v Queen of the Thistle – Jul 2003
Nickname – The Enforcer, Dunners

WIFC’s very own Big Chris first appeared at Worldnet 2003 following his appearance at the “Buy Back the Vic” match, where he was unfortunate enough to meet Sterry and Mathers. Chris started out in defence, but has since played up front and central midfield, where he earned a boot in the face, a broken nose and a couple of hours in Rotherham General during the first funbus trip. This sort of bravery also accounts for him leading the WIFC troops to the now legendary Cage nightclub for the first time, during Worldnet 2006. Fiercely committed, Chris regularly captained the team and was selected to represent England in the IFA Internationale match at Worldnet 2011, getting onto the scoresheet in the process.

Position – Full Back
DOB – 4/5/1979
Debut v Susies Salon – Jul 2000
Nicknames – Wellsy, Ginger Badger

Matt made his debut along with Rob Sterry in the drug-filled Amsterdam trip of 2000, and holds an unwanted club record as he went over 130 games before scoring his first goal, finally breaking that duck at West Ham in 2008. Voted most improved player three times, Matt also served as club treasurer for a number of years and accepted the poisoned chalice of organising the club’s fixtures from 2009-12, maintaining the club’s proud run of completing 20 league fixtures in each of his three seasons in the role. As a result of his efforts, Matt was inducted to the Hall of Fame in 2009. If we can just stop him wearing his big ginger sweater into the showers after playing, we’d be onto a right winner.

Equally at home at right back or centre half, Jamie’s dogged defending since bouncing back from knee injuries that sidelined him for three years have endeared him to his team-mates, so much so that he’s regularly featured in the top three of the player of the year voting without ever actually winning the coveted trophy. Jamie served on the management team with distinction for a number of years, and also holds the dubious honour of having been the first B team manager at Worldnet 2002. After 14 years of sterling service, Jamie stepped down from the full squad at the start of the 2014/15 campaign.
